Crafting the Best Fruity Pebbles Treats: Essential Ingredients
Our Fruity Pebbles Treats recipe is a delightful twist on the traditional rice krispie treat, so you’ll recognize many familiar components, all carefully selected for a gluten-free experience. Let’s explore the key ingredients that make these cereal bars so irresistible:
- Fruity Pebbles Cereal: We were absolutely thrilled to confirm that Post Fruity Pebbles cereal is genuinely gluten-free! This iconic cereal brings its unique, nostalgic taste and explosion of vibrant colors, transforming a simple crispy treat into a truly fun and festive dessert. When shopping, always double-check the packaging for the gluten-free certification, especially if opting for a generic brand. (For a great generic option, check our FAQ section below!)
- Gluten-Free Crisp Rice Cereal: This is a crucial ingredient for achieving the classic crispy texture. It’s vital to remember that the popular Rice Krispies brand is *not* gluten-free in the U.S. due to malt content. To ensure your treats are safe for celiac disease and gluten sensitivity, always use a certified gluten-free crisp rice cereal. We’ve compiled a comprehensive list of gluten-free brands of crisp rice cereal to help you choose the perfect one for all your gluten-free cereal treat creations.
- Mini Marshmallows: These delightful little puffs are the heart of any crispy treat. We prefer using mini marshmallows because they melt quickly and evenly, creating that perfectly gooey binder. Plus, we intentionally leave some whole to tuck into the mixture, providing a wonderful, soft marshmallow surprise in every bite! Always use fresh marshmallows for the best results; stale, hard marshmallows won’t melt as smoothly and can result in a tougher treat.
- Butter: Our recipe calls for a slightly generous amount of butter, and for good reason! This extra richness is key to preventing your Fruity Pebbles Treats from drying out and ensures they maintain an unbelievably soft, chewy, and gooey texture. Both salted and unsalted butter work wonderfully here, so use what you have on hand.
- Vanilla Extract & Salt: Don’t underestimate the power of this dynamic duo! A splash of pure vanilla extract adds warmth and depth, while a pinch of kosher salt beautifully balances the sweetness of the marshmallows and cereal. These seemingly small additions elevate the flavor profile, transforming your treats from good to absolutely extraordinary. Seriously, don’t skip them—they make all the difference!
Are Fruity Pebbles Gluten-Free? Absolutely!
Yes, you heard that right! Fruity Pebbles is one of those fantastic breakfast cereals that are naturally gluten-free. Post Consumer Brands takes great care in clearly disclosing allergen content and warnings on their labels, which is incredibly helpful for the gluten-free community. This delightful sweetened rice cereal is certified gluten-free, meaning it’s made without barley, malt, rye, wheat, or any wheat-derived ingredients, and adheres to strict manufacturing practices to prevent cross-contamination. Rest assured, Fruity Pebbles is considered a safe and delicious option for individuals with celiac disease and gluten intolerance. Its vibrant colors and fruity taste make it an excellent choice for crafting sweet treats like these!
How To Make Gluten-Free Fruity Pebbles Treats: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide
For exact ingredient measurements and detailed instructions, please refer to the recipe card conveniently located below.

- Prepare Your Pan: Begin by lining an 8×8 inch baking pan with parchment paper. This simple step is a game-changer, making it incredibly easy to lift your finished treats out of the pan. Leave a slight overhang of parchment on the sides to create convenient “handles” for removal later.
- Combine Your Cereals: In a generously sized mixing bowl (the bigger the bowl, the easier it is to stir without making a mess!), combine your Fruity Pebbles cereal and gluten-free crisp rice cereal. Stir gently to ensure an even blend, then set it aside while you prepare the marshmallow mixture.
- Set Aside Marshmallows: This is our secret for extra gooeyness! Measure out 1 cup of mini marshmallows and add them directly to your cereal mixture. These unmelted marshmallows will create delightful pockets of soft, chewy goodness throughout your treats.
- Melt Remaining Marshmallows & Butter: In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Once the butter is fully melted, add the rest of the marshmallows. Continue to melt them, stirring almost constantly, until the marshmallows are completely smooth and well combined with the butter. Maintaining a low heat is crucial here to prevent the marshmallows from becoming tough or rubbery. While some prefer a microwave, we find the stovetop offers more control for that perfect, silky-smooth consistency.
- Remove from Heat & Add Flavorings: As soon as the marshmallow mixture is fully melted and smooth, promptly remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract and salt. Adding these off the heat helps preserve the vanilla’s delicate flavor and ensures even distribution of the salt.
- Immediately Pour Over Cereal: Time is of the essence! Working quickly, pour the warm, melted marshmallow mixture directly over your prepared cereal and the reserved mini marshmallows in the large mixing bowl. Using a large, sturdy spatula, gently fold and stir the mixture until all the cereal flakes are thoroughly coated with the gooey marshmallow. Be careful not to overmix, as this can crush the cereal and compromise the texture.
- Gently Pat Into the Pan: Transfer the coated Fruity Pebbles mixture into your parchment-lined baking dish. Using lightly buttered fingertips or a buttered spatula, gently and evenly spread the mixture into the pan. The key here is to press down very lightly. Avoid compacting or crushing the cereal too tightly, as this will result in dense, hard treats rather than the desired light, soft, and wonderfully gooey texture. A gentle touch ensures perfect results every time!
- Let Set & Slice: Allow the cereal treats to cool and set at room temperature for at least 20-30 minutes. Once firm, use the parchment paper handles to lift the entire slab out of the pan. Place it on a cutting board and slice into 12-16 squares using a sharp knife. Store any leftover Fruity Pebbles rice krispie treats in an airtight container or a zip-top bag at room temperature for up to 3-4 days to maintain their freshness and chewiness. For individual portions, you can wrap them in plastic wrap or reusable food wrap.

Expert Tips and FAQs for the Best Fruity Pebbles Treats
The Secret to Soft, Gooey Fruity Pebbles Treats: The number one trick to ensuring your Fruity Pebbles treats are perfectly soft and gooey every single time is to be incredibly GENTLE when you’re patting them out into the pan. Resist the urge to press down hard or compact the mixture. Doing so will compress the cereal, resulting in dense, hard, and chewy bars rather than the light, airy, and soft texture we crave. Use the lightest touch possible! For an even easier time, lightly butter your spatula or dampen your fingertips slightly before pressing.
How to Achieve Neatly Cut Cereal Treats: For clean, professional-looking slices, we highly recommend using a bread knife or a serrated knife. Gently employing a sawing, back-and-forth motion will help you cut through the treats smoothly without crushing them or dragging the marshmallow, ensuring each square is beautifully defined. This technique works like a charm!
Can I Use Other Cereal Varieties? Absolutely! While Fruity Pebbles bring a unique flavor and color, these treats are highly adaptable. Many readers have successfully tried this recipe with Cocoa Pebbles for a delicious chocolatey twist. Experiment with other certified gluten-free cereals for endless possibilities!
How to Store Fruity Pebbles Treats: To keep your treats fresh, soft, and delicious, store them in an airtight container or a large zip-top bag at room temperature. They will maintain their quality for 3-4 days. Avoid refrigeration, as it can cause the treats to harden and become less chewy.
Can I Make These Ahead of Time? Yes! These treats are fantastic for making a day or two in advance. Prepare them as directed, let them cool completely, then store them in an airtight container. They’ll be ready to serve whenever you are, making them perfect for parties or meal prep.
Can I Double the Recipe? You can definitely double this recipe if you’re serving a larger crowd or simply want more delicious treats! Just make sure you use a larger pan (like a 9×13 inch baking dish) and a very large mixing bowl to accommodate the increased volume of ingredients.
Your Essential Gluten-Free Ingredient Check
As always when baking gluten-free, a quick check of your ingredients is paramount to ensure everything is safe for celiac disease and gluten intolerance. For this recipe, pay close attention to your cereals and marshmallows. Here’s a quick guide:
- Are Fruity Pebbles Gluten-Free? Yes! Post Fruity Pebbles cereal is proudly certified gluten-free and completely safe for those with celiac disease. If you’re looking for generic options, Malt-O-Meal Fruity Dyno-Bites cereal (a popular generic alternative) is also certified gluten-free. Always confirm the certification on any other brand you might consider using.
- Are Rice Krispies Gluten-Free? A common misconception! The Kellogg’s brand Rice Krispies cereal is NOT gluten-free, as it contains malt. To ensure your crispy treats are safe, you must use a certified gluten-free crisp rice cereal. We’ve done the research and rounded up all the reliable brands of gluten-free crisp rice cereal here. For these photos, we successfully used Aldi’s brand.
- Are Marshmallows Gluten-Free? Good news! Most marshmallows on the market are naturally gluten-free. However, it’s always a good practice to double-check the label, especially for lesser-known brands or flavored varieties. Refer to this comprehensive list of gluten-free marshmallows to confirm your chosen brand is safe.

Description
This easy recipe is a fruity, flavorful spin on a classic rice krispies treat. You’ll love the colorful look and nostalgic flavor of this easy treat!
Ingredients
- 4 cups Fruity Pebbles Cereal
- 2 cups Gluten-Free Crisp Rice Cereal*
- 10 oz. Marshmallows
- 6 Tablespoons Butter
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt (use 1/8 teaspoon if using table salt)
Instructions
- PREP YOUR PAN. Start by lining an 8×8 baking pan with parchment paper. (I like to leave a little parchment draped over the sides of the pan so I can use it as handles to lift the Fruity Pebbles treats out at the end.)
- COMBINE YOUR CEREALS. In a large mixing bowl (the larger the bowl, the easier it is to stir!), combine Fruity Pebbles and crisp rice cereal. Stir to blend well & set aside.
- SET ASIDE 1 CUP OF MARSHMALLOWS. You’ll melt most of the marshmallows, but we’ll tuck in a few unmelted mallows. Measure 1 cup of mini marshmallows and add them to the cereal.
- MELT REMAINING MARSHMALLOWS & BUTTER. In a large saucepan, melt the butter and add the rest of the marshmallows, melting over medium-low heat & stirring nearly constantly until the marshmallows are melted and the butter and marshmallows are well combined. (Some people prefer to melt the butter & marshmallows in a large microwave-safe bowl in the microwave, but I find you have better control in a large pot on the stovetop.)
- REMOVE FROM HEAT & ADD FLAVORINGS. Take the saucepan off the heat and stir in the vanilla extract and salt.
- IMMEDIATELY POUR OVER CEREAL. Working quickly, pour the melted marshmallow mixture over the cereal and mini marshmallows. Use a large spatula to gently stir until the cereal is well coated with the marshmallows
- GENTLY PAT INTO THE PAN. Carefully (so you don’t compact or crush the cereal), gently spread the Fruity Pebbles treats mixture into your prepared pan and gently smooth the surface with your fingertips or spatula. Remember not to pack the cereal down too tightly, or your Fruity Pebbles treats will be dense and hard rather than light and soft.
- LET SET & SLICE. Allow the cereal treats to cool at least 20-30 minutes, then cut into 12-16 pieces. Store leftover Fruity Pebbles rice krispie treats in an airtight bag at room temperature up to 3-4 days.
Notes
- Gluten-Free Check. Kellogg’s brand Rice Krispies cereal is NOT gluten-free. To keep these gluten-free & celiac safe, you MUST use certified gluten-free crisp rice cereal, like Barbara’s or Aldi’s brand.
- A Trick For Soft Fruity Pebbles Treats. One way to ensure you get soft, gooey fruity pebble treats is to be GENTLE when you’re patting them out into the pan. You don’t want to pack them down, or they’ll be compressed and dense, rather than gooey & light in texture. Use a gentle touch & they’ll be soft every time! (A buttered spatula or barely wet fingertips can make this easier.)
